The Maine Council of the Atlantic Salmon Federation (MC-ASF), is comprised of 26 different angling, conservation, education and watershed organizations from across the state that share a passion for protecting Atlantic salmon and other native anadromous fish species and our natural river and marine systems on which they depend.

The Council is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3)  organization, partnering with our local affiliates across the state, the Maine Council’s past accomplishments include:

  • Defeat of the Proposed Basin Mills Dam on the Penobscot River
  • Removal of Dams from the Souadabscook and Pleasant Rivers
  • Removal of the Edwards Dam & Restoration of the Kennebec River
  • Creation and Funding of the Maine Atlantic Salmon Commission
  • Federal Protection and Funding for Endangered Atlantic Salmon in Eight Maine Watersheds
  • Fish Passage Requirements on the Saco and Kennebec Rivers
  • Improved Water Use Planning and Management for Downeast Salmon Rivers
  • Local Salmon Hatchery Programs Across Maine
  • Educating Thousands of Maine School Children About Atlantic Salmon Through Our Fish Friends Program

Priority Issues and Programs:
  • Fish Friends and Magic on Rivers education programs
  • Penobscot Restoration Project
  • Acid rain advocacy and mitigation
  • Small dam removal
  • Environmentally sustainable aquaculture
  • Designation as Penobscot Bay as an aquaculture exclusion zone
  • Recovery of Atlantic salmon populations in the 8 rivers protected under the fereal Endangered Speicies Act.
  • State and federal appropriations for Atlantic salmon conservation and management.

Penobscot River Campaign
The Maine Council of ASF along with the Eddington, Penobscot and Veazie Salmon Clubs has launched a $150,000 grass roots campaign for the project. This raffle is part of the campaign and all proceeds will go towards removing the dams. The tickets are $20 each or 10 for $100.00. The drawing is May 2nd, 2009.
